Interns Wanted

GMU-TV Internship
(Comm 452)

GMU-TV is offering valuable experience in video production and development to a few good interns. GMU-TV seeks motivated, willing, and energetic undergraduate Communication students to lend their time and effort - a minimum of fifteen hours per week is required - in exchange for an engaging, fulfilling, educational, and rewarding experience. Interns will support a variety projects that will provide them with solid exposure to video production, development, and distribution activities. Selected interns will gain exposure to research, script and proposal writing, program development, program marketing, studio and field production, as well as design, audio, on-line and off-line editing. Those individuals who possess solid research and strong writing skills, a pleasant telephone manner, are self motivated and directed, and desire to enthusiastically help with major projects and minor tasks as part of the GMU-TV team are strongly encouraged to apply.

Communication Department Eligibility:

  1. at least 15 hours of communication credit completed;
  2. a minimum overall GPA of 2.5, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the student's major
  3. have already taken the appropriate basic production course (in most cases Comm 355) or have comparable experience;
  4. contact the associate Chair who oversees the COMM 452 process;
  5. identify the media organization on campus with which you wish to work. Contact the full time or part time faculty member in the Department of Communication who is willing to direct a student at the on-campus media organization.

Additional GMU-TV Eligibility:

  1. preferably a communication major with a focus on production;
  2. minimum overall GPA of 2.5, only A's and B's in Comm classes;
  3. junior or senior status;

Internship Workload:

  1. 14 weeks @ 15 hours/week. = 210 hours; (2 days a week.)
  2. Daily journal to be turned in at the end of the semester;
  3. 8-10 page paper summarizing experience;

Application Process:

  1. Be sure you meet the eligibility requirements;
  2. Submit a resume and cover letter to GMU-TV.
    Include 3 references. (Please do not ask current GMU-TV staff to provide a reference.)

  3. If appropriate, GMU-TV will contact you to set up an interview.
  4. GMU-TV will contact you no later than one week prior to the first week of classes to indicate your acceptance.
  5. Submit all of the following to the Communication Department Associate Chair prior to the beginning of the first week of classes:
    1. Complete the Comm 452 application form which may be obtained in the student major's handbook or the Department of Communication (212 Thompson Hall).
    2. Submit with your application a typewritten practicum communication proposal which includes the following areas of discussion: (2-3 pages in length).
      • A brief background of your background and experiences that would make this learning experience appropriate;
      • Identification of completed coursework related to your proposed learning experience;
      • A statement of why you want to have this experience;
      • An explanation of the requirements to be assessed for the evaluation of your grade;
      • Your course load and schedule for the semester you wish to sign up for COMM 452/GMU-TV Internship
    3. A current copy of your complete transcript.
