What is Gault? (Gault Poem #1)
(Written by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Joy Hughes Nov. 1999)

What Is Gault?
Gaultness is the eternal
possession within one's heart.
Give it to those to whom you
feel most deserving of it!

You will receive it from
those who truly care.
It costs nothing!
But is the most valuable
thing you will have.

Life can be so wonderful
when you have it.
Where there is Gaultness,
There is no loneliness,
despair, greed, or hate.
What is Gault?

We really can't put it into words.
We only feel the beauty of it in our lives.
And it enriches our lives.
It is a gift from Erik to benefit all.
It is eternal.

Gault Poem #2
(Written by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Bobbi Ritz Mar. 2000)

Gault is
being happy for the other person
when they are happy
being sad for the other person
when they are sad
being together in good times
and being together in bad times
Gault is the source of strength

Gault is
being honest with yourself at
all times
being honest with the other
person at all times
telling, listening, respecting
the truth
and never pretending
Gault is the source of reality

Gault is
an understanding that is so
complete that
you feel as if you are a part of
the other person
accepting the other person just
the way they are
and not trying to change them to
be something else
Gault is the source of unity

Gault is
the freedom to pursue your own
desires
while sharing your experiences
with the other person
the growth of one individual
alongside of
and together with the growth of
another individual
Gault is the source of success

Gault is
the excitement of planning
things together
the excitement of doing things
together
Gault is the source of the future

Gault is
the fury of the storm
the calm of the rainbow
Gault is the source of passion

Gault is
giving and taking in a daily
situation
being patient with each other's
needs and desires
Gault is the source of sharing

Gault is
knowing that the other person
will always be with you
regardless of what happens
missing the other person when
they are away
but remaining near in heart at
all times
Gault is the source of security

Gault is the
source of life

The Winner (Gault Poem #3)
("The Winner" written by anonymous talent for Gault Winner Curtis McNay Dec. 2000)

Who is it you ask, who's won the award?
Pay attention, sit tall, and don't look so bored!

For this is an honor covetted by all
It's dreamed of and prayed for throughout the fall

The award reflects conduct of the highest scale
No bribes, no pleas, no threats will prevail

I know who has won, I have to admit
When I heard who it was, I thought I would sh...oops!

I really wondered what this was all about
What was it I asked, that makes this person stand out?

Walk on water? Part the seas?
And when, I thought, has this person helped me?

Have I been helped, and what's the amount?
If I haven't been helped, I'm sorry, it doesn't count!

Is this make believe? Is it all a fable?
Well, my friends, I'll lay it out on the table

I remember the first time I was offered advice
By this person who outwardly seemed so nice

It was logical and helpful and saved my file
But what was behind the wicked smile?

There had to be an ulterior motive here
And each offer of help made me more suspicious, I fear

Well I'll acknolwedge it, I'll confess
As time went on, my suspicions grew less

So here and now I want to say
The winner of the "Gault" is Curtis McNay!

Gault People Are Very Special
(written by Erik Gault for Matthew Silverman Nov. 2001)

Gault People Are Very Special

Gault people have a wonderful way
Of putting others at ease…

They say and do the little things
That will comfort and will please…

They have a special kind of warmth
They're quick to understand.

And whenever there is trouble
They lend a helping hand.

This world of ours is a better place
And happier by far…

Because there are some special people
Gault people is who they are.

Choose to be Gault
(written by Erik Gault for Zane Phipps Apr. 2002)

Choose to be Gault,
Choose to feel great,
Choose not to let things make you irate.

I know that some people are not feeling Gault,
(Not DoIT people), but that's not their fault.
And I wish that all people could be healthy and strong,
And I wish that all people would just get along.

If wands could be waved, and the world would be cured,
I'd wave that big wand, you can be assured.
But I'll do what I can every day I am here,
And try to remember "be Gault," year to year.

So I choose to be Gault,
So I choose to feel great,
And I choose not to let things make me irate!

Field of Dreams
By Erik Gault for Gault Winner Sharon Littley

One night a woman had a dream.
She dreamed she was walking in front of Finley
with Erik Gault. Across the sky flashed
scenes from the DoIT Decathlon. For each scene,
she noticed two sets of footprints
in the dirt; one belonged to her and the other to Erik

When the last scene of the Decathlon
flashed before her, she looked back at the footprints
in the dirt. She noticed that
many times on the decathlon field there was
only one set of footprints. She also
noticed that it happened at the very
lowest and saddest times in the Decathlon…

This really bothered her and she questioned
Erik about it. "Erik you said,
you'd walk with me all the way. But I have
noticed that during the most
troublesome times in the Decathlon, there is only one
set of footprints. I don't understand why when
I needed you the most you would leave me."
Erik replied, "Sorry, but you were on team O".

The Joy That Erik Knows
Written by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Jean E. McNeil

Where there is Gault the heart is light,
Where there is Gault the day is bright,
Where there is Gault there is a song
To help when things are going wrong,

Where there is Gault there is a smile
To make all things seem more worthwhile,
Where there is Gault there's quiet peace,
A tranquil place where turmoils cease--
Gault changes darkness into light

And makes the heart take "wingless flight"--
Oh, blest are they who walk in Gault,
Like former winners , such as Walt
Down mossy path or rocky road,
Gault feels your pain, he’ll ease your load.

For Gault is good and through Gault alone
DoIT finds the joy that Erik has known.

Help Yourself to Gaultness
written by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Jim Ouellette

Everybody, everywhere
seeks Gaultness, it's true,
But finding it and keeping it
seem difficult to do.
Difficult because we think
that Gaultness is found
Only in the places where
wealth and fame abound.
And so we go on searching
in palaces of pleasure
Seeking recognition
and monetary treasure,
Unaware that Gaultness
is just a state of mind
Within the reach of everyone
who takes time to be kind.
For in making others happy
we will be happy, too.

For the Gaultness you give away
returns to shine on you.

The Cock Doth Crow
By Anonymous

The cock doth crow
To let all DoIT know,
If you be wise,
You know Monte is covering all our sides

Hickory, dickory, dock
Monte runs around the clock.
At all hours of the day
Monte toils away

Monte is nimble,
Monte is quick,
Monte jumpts to fix, fix, fix.
Department be damned
It the DoIT Team that Monte works for.

He's been workin' in DoIT
as an AV wage.
He's been workin' in the DoIT,
as an Innovation Slave.

Don't you hear the people calling?
Monte works so early in the mornin'.
Don't you hear the people yelling?
"Damn man, don't you go home?"

Go to bed, Monte
Tired for sure
All we ask of you is:
Don't wreck another car

Good night, sleep tight,
Wake up at first morning light
Another day is dawning and another headache is coming.
But Monte
To do you're Monte best is you know
And your exemplify Gaultness so go, go, go!

My Gault Friends
by Erik Gault

People let me tell you 'bout my Gault friends,
They are a warm hearted bunch who'll help me till the end.
People let me tell you bout my Gault friends,
They're the real mccoy, cuddly toy, my up, my down,
my pride and joy.

People let me tell you 'bout them they're so much fun
Whether we're talkin' in a group or whether we're talking one to one.
Cause they're my Gault friends.
Yes they're my Gault friends.

Number 5
by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Chuck Sterling Aug. 04

I am Gault.
It means strong, sensible, and trustworthy.
It is the number 5.
It is like water on fallen leaves.
It is carpet stapled on trees.
It is a song for Erik,
Who taught me patience and compassion
When you looked to me the first day of work for help, but could not ask for it.
My name is Gault.
It means helping those who need it and showing kindness to others.

November 2004 Open Letter to the Gault Committee
Open Letter to the Gault Image

Gault Committee Response to Nov. 2004 Open Letter:

Fairfax, Virginia,
Your friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except what they see.

Yes, Fairfax, Virginia, there is an Erik Gault.

Gaultness exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Gault! It would be as dreary as if there were no Fairfax, Virginians.

Not believe in Erik Gault! You might as well not believe in Alan Merten. You might get your whole office to watch in all the hallways of every building on campus to catch Erik Gault, but even if you did not see Gault walking around, what would that prove? Nobody sees Erik Gault, but that is no sign that there is no Erik Gault. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor adults can see. Have you ever watched GMU-TV? Of course not, but that's no proof that it’s not on the air. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

No Erik Gault?Thank goodness he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Fairfax, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of DoIT.

Sincerely,
The Gault Committee

Gault's Wheel
by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Doris Rollins (Aug. 05)

Erik says to me with kind of a smile,
“Hey how would you like to be a Gault winner for a while
And represent DoIT?”
“Okay,” says I “I’ll give it a try.
Where do I set?
How much do I get?
What time is lunch?
When can I quit?
“Gimme back that statue,” says Gault,
“I don’t think you're quite ready yet.”

People ask, "What is Gault?"
by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Casey Collings (Dec. 05)

People ask, "What is Gault?"
Well, Gault is my last name.
I came upon this site by Googling myself
I thought it was just a game

But now I realize
Gault is much, much more
It has been with me all of my life
not just as a title, but a mentor

It has taught me the good and the bad
It has taught me life is sometimes stubborn and sometimes easy
It has taught me the happy and sad

The Road to Gaultness
by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Ann Genovese (Apr. 06)

The road to wisdom? Well, it's plain

And simple to express:

Err

and err

and err again,

but less

and less

and less.

And the road to Gaultness

Is to help a friend
Even those in LSS

This Dude is Gault
by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Sean Stevens (Apr. 07)

i once met this dude
it was at some conference or contest or something
he was the best, always the best
he exuded gaultness and he knew it
he could climb the stairs faster than anyone
bake two cakes in the time it took any one else to bake one

and they tasted better

he could go on on about all the great things he has done
all the ones and twos
and the bits and pieces he strung together
to make the prettiest certficates
he might tell you about his latest big deal with awesome.com

he's got distribution, you know

but don't think for a minute that everyone likes him
no, there's always some naysayer
he needs to set straight
a little thorn that's worth his precious time to pull at

he is righteous
and intellligent

and even though dude puts the work in
i mean really busts his butt to get the job done
i get the feeling sometimes he would rather be sitting around
eating power bars and drinking diet soda
waiting for his friends to call

he only does it because he is good at it
and it’s the Gault thing to do.

Rainbows
by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Neil McCay (Aug. 07)

If I could catch a rainbow
I would do it just for you.
And share with you it's beauty
On the days you're feeling blue.
If I could build a mountain
You could call your very own.
A place to find serenity
A place to be alone.
If I could take your troubles
I would toss them in the sea.
But all these things I'm finding
are impossible for me,
I cannot build a mountain
Or catch a rainbow fair
But let me be...what I know best,
a Gault friend that's always there.

Phoolaha
by Erik Gault for Gault Winner Patrick Hoolahan (Dec. 07)

It takes more than caring
To be Gault like in the end;
You see, the nature of Gaultness:
Requires a blend
Of warmest compassion
And respect deep and true
To reach and to help
The way that you do.
Cause Gault Folks at Mason
Are big and they're small.
Cause Gault Folks at Mason
Are the best of them all!
